Education

Education is one of the vital components of the AFI DALLAS International Film Festival's mission and programming.
In addition to Q&A sessions and panels at the Festival's
venues, AFI DALLAS holds an annual series of master classes with internationally
known filmmakers, composers, producers and actors at SMU, TCU and other area
universities. Master classes are also presented for high school students from
all over North Texas.
Master teachers for these classes in 2008 included Josh Brolin,
Barry Levinson and Stephen Rea, as well as other filmmakers, screenwriters and
participants from throughout the Festival.
In support of our mission of educating the next generation of
filmmakers, short films from area universities and high schools were presented
in special screening sessions during the 2008 Festival and will be a highlight of the 2009 Festival. The educational efforts
of AFI DALLAS are not targeted just at the
"traditional" student. We also presented a series of panels,
discussions and presentations for the wide range of film patrons and industry
professionals who attended the Festival.
For a third year, AFI DALLAS will produce a series of Talk/Shows at the Nasher Sculpture Center. These panel discussions and presentations will take place over the opening weekend of the Festival and will feature filmmakers, industry executives, scholars and journalists in a series of discussions on a wide range of topics. Talk/Shows are free and open to the public. For the complete schedule, click here.
AFI DALLAS also works to provoke discussion and debate on topics of interest and impact to filmmakers and industry professionals. Working with the many professional film and industry organizations across Texas, a series of Industry Happy Hour Conversations will be a part of the 2009 Festival. On topics from producing and distributing independent films to the challenges of screenwriting in an Internet age, these gatherings will be an opportunity for Festival participants to network with film and video professionals from across North Texas and around the world.
